About

Who We Are

The Flathead Expanding Your Horizons is a volunteer community of STEM professionals, educators, parents, community leaders, and government and corporate representatives from around Flathead Valley. Financial support comes from donations, sponsorships and grants made by individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies.

We want to share our passion for STEM subjects with younger girls, to encourage them to pursue STEM subjects in their future studies and careers.

Our History

1974

The EYH Network as the Math/Science Network, an informal group of women scientists and educators in the San Francisco Bay Area who were concerned about low female participation in math courses. On a volunteer basis, members of the group began planning coordinated efforts to strengthen their individual programs and to offer mutual support.

1983

EYH was first introduced to the Flathead Valley by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), at Flathead High school for girls in grades 6th through 12th.

2007

The Soroptimist International clubs of Bigfork, Kalispell, Polson, and Whitefish, have been organizing and fundraising for the Flathead EYH program

2014

Over 300 7th-8th grade girls from all corners of Northwest Montana participated in the conference this year.

2015

Expecting over 300 girls at this years event.

About Expanding Your Horizons Network

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) mission is to encourage young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. Through EYH conferences, STEM role models and hands-on activities are provided for middle school girls.

Research indicates that attending the conference has a long-term positive influence on the participants. Young women who attended the conference indicated that they took more advance math and science classes in high school and planned to continue on to higher education. Their attitudes toward math and science were rated more positive than those who did not attend.

A follow up survey revealed that the students who attended EYH also explored additional information about non-traditional STEM careers. The evaluators concluded that the EYH conferences were an effective and low cost intervention.

Our ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st Century challenges.

Currently Expanding Your Horizons conferences are held in 31 states and in Europe and Asia.
